A team from TU Dortmund, Paderborn and Duisburg-Essen universities in Germany and the University of Oxford has found a way to change the inner structure of a special kind of glass during manufacturing.
The glasses are made from metal-organic frameworks, or MOFs. Adding a molecule called 1,10-phenanthroline while melting them lowers the melting temperature and changes how the metal atoms bond, which gives researchers control over properties such as magnetism and how the glass handles light.
Melting at lower temperatures also avoids damage that would otherwise happen during production. The study was published in Nature Materials.
