Rare tamarin twins ride on their parents' backs at a tiny zoo

Shaldon Wildlife Trust in Devon, one of the smallest accredited zoos in the UK, has welcomed twin pied tamarins. The pair were born on 29 September to parents Bobby and Pedra.

Pied tamarins are critically endangered and among the most threatened primates in South America. In the wild they survive only in a shrinking patch of rainforest around Manaus, Brazil.

The species is delicate and needs calm surroundings and specialist care, so keepers kept the births quiet for a few weeks. The infants are now doing well and have started riding on their parents' backs as they explore.

Director Zak Showell said the zoo is one of only two in Europe to breed the species successfully this year.
